The project site began with a single office building with two separate wings, and a maze of partitioned offices within, original to its 1980s design. The architect and the client instead envisioned an open, lively campus hub with myriad types of work spaces to encourage interaction and collaboration. To integrate the detached wings, a series of connecting stairs were erected through the atrium, requiring careful and coordinated of the complicated structural work between engineers, architect and construction team. In terms of special features, the team procured a difficult to install dichroic film for a bit of dazzle in the main cafe. The project utilized BIM modeling early on to coordinate the complicated networks of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire protection, and structural elements in a virtual model, which minimized the inevitable conflicts throughout construction.
